Day 78 - Truly Mixed Bag

Before 5AM from our bedroom window

Shortly after 5AM

As you can see by the sunrise photos, morning comes early this far north. We left the house shortly after 6 o’clock and headed into town to witness the start of the Lake Placid Marathon. This race is a biggie and a Boston Marathon qualifier. Hundreds crammed the streets at the start of the combination marathon and 1/2 marathon. 213 finished the marathon portion. It must have been a tough race because the temps reached into the 80s yesterday.

 Here they come...

...there they go.

After seeing the start we headed off to Au Sable and the Ausable Chasm. What a beautiful drive and the sights along the Chasm walk were beautiful. It’s billing is, “The Grand Canyon of the Adirondacks.” Because of our early start, we were back in Lake Placid in time for a Ben & Jerry’s Lunch - yum!!

Kinda pretty!!

On our return to the “camp” (New York slang for beautiful home in the mountains), we discovered we had no electricity. After checking around the Internet we discovered the entire city of Lake Placid was without power. Because we had a gas range, we spent some time cooking up a mess of collard greens and just kicking back enjoying the camp and the views. Interestingly, we lost not only power, but our cellular Internet connections were lost as well.

Later we learned the power outage would likely last until 10pm. So, in the late afternoon we drove into downtown Lake Placid and marveled at the dark, closed businesses. Main Street was like a ghost town after having been the collecting place for thousands just earlier in the day. We’re still not sure about the cause of the outage, but our drive took us by a couple of beautiful old barns that were not at all bothered by the lack of electricity.

New roof...

Amazing structure!

Our power came back on sometime during the night and we’re back in business.
